Description

Differing from the hundreds of analog EQ emulations in the plugin market, StonEQ 4k has its own personality, color and behavior. It is not, nor does it try to be, a faithful emulation of the original EQ.

Let us demonstrate with an example: When using the “Width” control, you will notice that from 0% to 49% the equalizer is rather surgical — mostly used to “repair” audio as well as to eliminate unwanted resonances or frequencies. In this sense, the band behaves more like the Black unit. However, when employing a width from 50% to 100%, the band will become much more musical.

In addition, StonEQ 4k features its own unique form of saturation, ranging from subtle to aggressive.

Key Features

  • Refined analog style. Four bands and two filters.
    • Highs: Featuring selectable high shelf or bell filter.
    • High Mids: Ranging from 300 Hz to 7000 Hz.
    • Low Mids: Ranging from 100 Hz to 3000 Hz.
    • Lows: Featuring selectable low shelf or bell filter.
    • Filters: Featuring low pass and high pass filters.
  • Saturation Ranges from very subtle, passing through “warm” levels, all the way to levels approaching overdriven.
  • Output to level the output volume.
  • A/B switch for A/B comparison.
  • Presets system to create and edit both user and factory presets.
  • Support for HQ screen resolution (Retina)

In depth

Highs

Represented by the blue color, this band has a selectable range of frequencies from 1500 Hz to 16000 Hz, with a gain ranging from -15 to +15 dB. It has two operation modes: Bell and High Shelf that can be selected with the “Bell” switch.

  • The Bell mode is a bell filter represented by a rather wide bell, serving to obtain crisp and clear highs. At the same time, it can be quite pronounced and strong, but always remains pleasant to the ear.
  • The High Shelf mode is a shelf-type filter designed to sound smooth and lend “air” to an entire mix or a single instrument.

Mids

StonEQ’s two bands blend some characteristics of the brown unit and others from the black unit. The differences are more noticeable when manipulating the Width control, represented by the bell-shaped icon. Narrower settings (represented by the minus symbol: “-“) more closely resemble the “black” unit. When the bell is set wider (represented by the plus symbol: “+”) its sound is more similar to the “brown” unit.

In both bands the Gain control has a range from -15 to +15 dB.

  • High Mid Band (represented by the red color) has a frequency ranging from 300 Hz to 7000 Hz.
  • Low Mid Band (represented by the green color) has a frequency ranging from 100 Hz to 3000 Hz.

Lows

Represented by orange color, this band has a frequency range from 30 Hz to 450hz with an adjustable gain from -15 dB and +15 dB.

The low band has two modes of operation: Bell and Low Shelf, which can be selected from the “Bell” switch.

  • Bell mode is a bell filter type featuring a medium size “width.” Bell mode can emphasize frequencies which may help single instruments to “sit” in the mix. Bell mode’s boost can be used musically to provide a natural, clear sound (for example, bell mode can be used to boost the fundamental frequencies of a kick drum without unwanted mud and clutter).
  • The Low Shelf mode is a shelf type filter. Like the “brown” unit’s low shelf mode, StonEQ’s low shelf mode is designed to be musical.

Filters

High Pass and Low Pass are modeled from the original channel strip. Both filters are designed to eliminate unwanted frequencies and help tracks “sit” in your mix.

High Pass has a wide frequency array, ranging from 0 Hz (off) to 1000 Hz.

Low Pass covers frequencies from 2 Khz to 22 Khz (off).

Saturation

Saturation is controlled by the Drive control (labeled “DRV”). DRV ranges from very subtle, passing through “warm” levels, all the way to levels approaching overdriven.

When the DRV knob is set to 0% the saturation algorithm is completely disengaged from the plugin (yielding no saturation whatsoever).

Setting the DRV knob between 20% and 40% produces a subtle but colored saturation. At higher levels, ranging between 50% and 70%, saturation leans toward a clipping effect (reminiscent of analog clipping) which trims peaks, producing a natural limiter effect.

When set above 70%, saturation sounds more aggressive, reaching toward overdriven.

StonEQ’s saturation algorithm interacts with equalization (since it is placed after the EQ module). As such, EQ settings affect its subtly or intensity.

“StoneEQ 4k is a truly efficient EQ. It is straight-forward to use and provides highly musical equalization curves. The included console saturation emulation knob works wonders, either for warming up the signal or for giving an aggressive rock vibe to a track. A great EQ plugin, versatile yet with character.”

I’ve been through p.a ..u.a….harrison mixbus..I own all blackroosters plugins…and can easily name 5 other brands…none have gave me a 3d color like sonimus 4k eq..in fact I don’t even feel creative without it.

It is a fundamental tool in my work. Excellent and light

You can’t go wrong with this one! An easy to work with, versatile and excellent sounding eq. Another very well designed plugin by Sonimus.

Sounds like magic. Go-to EQ along with SonEQ2. And great value for money.

For me the StonEQ 4k is easily the best SSL style EQ i have come across. I have heard terms like warm and smooth used to describe filters and eq’s in the past but never felt like I could fully hear and understand what people meant when they used that terminology. I remember using the High & Low pass filters on the StonEQ 4k for the first time and thinking to myself “oh that’s what people mean when they say smooth filters”. This is the first EQ that has made me think that. Everything about Sonimus plugins is great and the attention to detail is refreshing. From the 0 latency and low CPU to the great sound and ideal user interface features (like double click to reset knob parameters & optimally setup preset library), its like they knew exactly what I wanted without me even knowing I wanted it. Full support for Sonimus!

I was looking for the SSL EQ channel outside of the big name software makers and already own and use SonEQ Pro regularly. This is a great plug-in for when you aren’t drawing for a surgical EQ. It’s still new in my arsenal but I know it will see a lot of use. The only upgrade I could want in future versions would be visual representation of the Q-width on the screen (like the Solid-EQ from Native Instruments); or an image of a broad or narrow curve on either side to remind me which direction I need to turn the Q-knob.

I have 4K emulation eq’s, this one is perhaps not the most accurate to any original gear, but this is the 4k emulation I prefer : punchy in the lows, musical in the mids and smooth in the highs with a nice selectable saturation. Low CP usage and zero latency too…

The only other algo SSL EQ that works for me is the SSL Native Channel Strip. But this is much quicker and easier to get a better sound than I had hoped for, while also invoking a somatic sensation that’s to die for! Yes, that’s right, if you let the emotional feelings in your body make your mixing decisions for you, you won’t think to choose anything before Sonimus. Let’s be fair – if I could only use Acustica for sound and feel, I would. But who can?! With Satson, Satson CS, and StonEQ 4k, I have no interest in buying the Acustica SSL emulations – I just love these too much and can’t get over the tingly emotions that rush over my entire body from hearing my sounds through them. The hardware SSL console I’ve used didn’t do this for me, even though I use the memory of that console’s sound and feel to compare all analog emulations to. StonEQ 4k is an absolutely essential piece of gear, with slightly less CPU usage than Satson CS (which is also unfathomably low on CPU consumption), making it a perfect companion. The only reason I review these is because of the familial service I consistently receive from Sonimus; otherwise, I wouldn’t want anyone else to know about these “secret” weapons! Please write a review after falling in love with these. Small word-of-mouth companies – who don’t scam you with marketing manipulation, paid endorsements by Grammy winners, and deceptive sales – require these reviews, and future users (especially the young newbies) deserve to know the TRUTH.

For many years on and off I’ve used Plugin Alliance’s version of this plugin (which also had other additions to it: compressor, gate, etc) but could never really connect with it. It never felt like how an SSL board reacts (I’ve recorded a couple full-length albums on an SSL board years ago). For the short time I’ve had this plugin, I’ve noticed I’ve been choosing it as one of my go-to EQ’s. There’s a certain accuracy and clear warmth, if you will, that this EQ imbues, I can’t quite put a finger on it yet, but it reacts how I want an EQ to react with an analog realism to the experience. I wasn’t expecting to be impressed, but like most of their other plugins, I find myself very impressed once again. Well done!

My favourite version of SSL 4k EQ. It was a great idea to combine both the brown and black version. It can get from smooth to very surgical. Having used an actual SSL 4kE for some time, I instantly feel comfortable with this tool and it can get me the sound I want in seconds. I am also very impressed with its saturation knob. It is ideal for soft-clipping offensive transients very transparently. Snares and toms in a busy mix, bass etc. Beautiful GUI too.

I do like this EQ because it is effective but subtle. Even the drive knob when you push it at max, it is still very smooth sounding and sweetens the mids some. Let me put it this way. If you butcher a sound with this…the shame is on YOU. Not the plugin

A/B signal over 1 track you might think OK, but A/B signal over multiple tracks summed, eh voilà!

All the way a great sounding character EQ. Once you get into the workflow you want to use it for subtractive and adictive EQing on every channel that needs it. Trust your ears not your eyes and get better sounding mixes. I highly recommend this plugin.
