Description

Key Features

  • Inspired by the classic 1073 Equalizer.
  • Three bands, HP filter, gain, and output controls.
  • Each EQ band can be bypassed.
  • Warm, open, and analog sound.
  • Analog style modelled saturation: LINE and MIC.
  • Supported platforms: VST 2.4, VST 3.0, AU, AAX, and RTAS.
  • Zero-latency for real-time usage.
  • Sample rates up to 192 kHz supported.
  • Carefully optimized for low CPU usage.

Saturation

  • LINE Saturation (introduced by turning the red knob to the right side) is a subtle saturation – ideal for adding just a bit of color to your tracks.
  • MIC Saturation (imparted by turning the red knob to the left side) lends more color. Mic saturation can be very aggressive at high values. If you want to add a moderate amount of color/warmth to your track, use low values (from 10 to 20). If you want to introduce more apparent saturation, use values from 20 to 40. Values higher than 40 will push the saturation effect into overdrive – great for warm and crunchy vocals, organ/keys, drums overheads, rooms, bass, or any virtual instrument.

In depth

EQ Bands

  • High Pass: high pass filter with five frequency positions: OFF, 50hz, 80hz, 160hz and 300hz.
  • Low Shelf: low band control with four selectable frequencies: 35hz, 60hz, 110hz and 220hz.
  • Mids: bell style filter with six selectable frequencies: 300hz, 700hz, 1.6khz, 3.2khz, 4.8khz and 7.2khz.
  • High Shelv: fixed high shelf filter for high frequency control.

Gain & Output

  • Gain: The red knob controls the saturation level with two types of saturation: LINE and MIC.
The right portion of the knob’s circumference controls the LINE saturation, which imparts a very subtle effect. >The left portion of the knob’s circumference governs the MIC saturation, which is warmer and can be aggressive when set to high values.
  • Output: Controls the output volume.

If you want add a moderate amount of color/warmth to your track, use low values (from 10 to 20). If you want to introduce more apparent saturation, use values from 20 to 40. Values higher than 40 will push the saturation effect into overdrive – great for warm and crunchy vocals, organ/keys, drums overheads, rooms, bass, or any virtual instrument.

Burnley 73 can be used exclusively as a saturation plugin by bypassing the equalizer (by clicking the EQ IN button so that it appears grey). For a warm/analog sounding mix, experiment with using Burnley 73’s MIC or LINE saturation on multiple tracks and/or on your mix buses.

Bypassing Bands

Each band can be bypassed by clicking on the corresponding symbol above the knob. When the symbol is red, the band is bypassed. A white symbol indicates that the band is enabled.

Bottom menu

  • EQ In: Enables or disables the EQ section.
  • Phase Invert: Inverts the phase of the output.
  • Show Labels: Displays numeric values when knobs are tweaked.
  • Back Panel: Clicking the Sonimus “S” logo allows you to access Burnley 73’s back panel. Here you will find your plugin version number, plugin registration, and a link to our support website.

I generally like the plugins. The sound is very good, which is the most important thing. The only thing I miss is better resolution (because I have a 4k display). I can’t wait for the Burnley 73 upgrade to come out :)

Great tool. Just wandering why every time i reopen the mix in ableton all outputs of Burnely drop down to -8dbs . Clearly i am setting something wrong in my mix. Glad if you could enlight me. Thanks! Nico

We all buy plug-ins that we end up not using. This is NOT one of them! I love the Burnley 73 so much. I put it on a vocal I was having trouble with. I had put so many different plug-ins on the track to find what I was going after, it ended up sounding like digital mush. I took everything off and put the Burnley 73 on and wow wow wow, I dialed in what sounded like heaven to me. And it didn’t take long. I love the simplicity of it, yet you’ll find there is a lot of flexibilty in getting the sound you want. Like a lot of other people have said, it is very musical sounding. I’m so grateful to the folks at Sonimus for creating this product! This will be a definite go-to for me.

  13. Guy (verified owner)

    Sounds awesome! Just get it.

  14. Chris Walton (verified owner)

Burnley 73 is quite simply, GREAT!!!
I just put three instances of Burnley 73 across different vocal busses in a session and quickly dialed in similar tonal settings with different levels of gain to suit . The EQ is rich, well balanced and pleasing to the ear in the upper frequency range…just like a 1073 type EQ should be. The ease of use and low CPU usage are a WINNER!
Burnley 73 my new go to for rich vocal vibes and punchy drums…and anything else I can use it on I guess? This EQ is a very welcome addition and I’m looking forward to using it accross all of my sessions.
Burnley 73 ROCKS! Thank you Sonimus.

What an excellent sound design tool!! I love this eq especially the mic and line saturation. So versatile and It’s really great on everything.

  20. Anonymous (verified owner)

Sounds really good, my only note with it is that I lose clarity/texture really quickly with the mic drive, often before I get to my desired amount of color. Still, best 1073 plugin I’ve found, AND for a wonderful price too

I wish i had this plugin looongg time ago, this one + britson is GEM…truly time saver,
    1. just adjust gain mic/line
    2. high pass (if needed)
    2. If needed, point your freq..boost or cut into your taste, compensate output, and it’s done!
No BS but something is missing when bypass britson and burnley73,

Very easy to dial in sweetspots and create the ‘overall EQ’ and ‘vibe’ of a track. Lots of vintage character in the bests of ways. For EQ I nowadays only use the Burnley, a decent Pultec emulation and Fabfilter for the last EQ finetuning.

At first I thought it was a waste of money but found a sweet spot boosting the distortion into Saturn 2 on a lot of sources. Saturn acts as a limiter so Burnley just pushes into that without raising loudness but increasing perceived loudness.

  51. Thomas G. (verified owner)

The plugin ist outstanding. The sales process can be improved. I did not receive an account confirmation. By resetting the login password, I finally got access to my account. And no, the email did not end up in the spam filter.

  56. Matthew B. (verified owner)

I LOVE this! Push it and it gets bigger and thicker, more forward(?)…even b4 touching the EQ bands. EQ is very musical. Just what I needed for my vocals. I’m currently remixing some songs because of this.

  57. Emanuele Maracchioni (verified owner)

    I love the plugin

  58. Michael (verified owner)

    Sounds as advertised

  59. Anonymous (verified owner)

This is a fantastic plugin. I was not a fan of Neve emulations before finding this and NoiseAsh’s 31102. With more character than some other 1073s I’ve tried, this one gives a nice brightness that manages to keep from being harsh, and it has a great driving preamp knob that you can fully distort with. I was never one to buy into the idea of emulating the workflow of the days of yore, but there is something to be said for having a nice, broad EQ like the Burnley to help simplify your process. It’s a great complement to a more precise option, particularly when your source already sounds great and you’re looking to add some presence.

  60. Inal Bilsel (verified owner)

I don’t own the hardware but I thoroughly enjoy this no matter how close or far it is from the original hardware.
A resizable GUI and seperate frequency and cut/boost knobs would be appreciated.

It sounds great on everything. Even just turning up the gain with everything bypassed, really adds weight to my stock interface pres. The low cut sounds really good too. At first I tried just getting the demo but I ended up using it on everything so I had to get it.

  75. Sean (verified owner)

Do not have the fortune of actually comparing the Burnley to an actual 1073, but regardless, the Burnley 73 is a very very versatile plugin that truly adds some nice analog warmth to your track.

Adds nice harmonic saturation and the EQ bands are well designed for various applications, though they really shine when used on synths, acoustic guitar, drums, and are exceptional on vocals.

I am really happy with the purchase!

  76. Lucas Jose Serena (verified owner)

This one is a masterpiece, and i DO leave some not-so-polight comments on other plugins. But this one sounds amazing, the shelving high opens every instrument really well.

IMO, the best 1073 plug around. I owned a couple 1073’s in the past and this is one pair with the newer AMS Neve versions of the 1073. The beauty of the 1073 is the simplicity. Grab and go EQ and move on.

Add Sonimus Britson and you got yourself a “Virtual Vintage Neve” console in your DAW.

  85. Dave O’Higgins (verified owner)

This sounds really good – on a par with the UAD, which I already own, but less fuss to use and without the annoying low hum when you drive the pre. A 1073 EQ gives you some real attitude in just the right frequencies for certain sources, especially snare & bass drum. It’s good for “oomph”. Sonimus have judged the saturation well without losing their minds over it like Arturia.

  86. Bob Thorpe (verified owner)

I have a hardware 1073 which I love and I’ve been looking for a software version for a long time that has the same kind of punch and clarity. I’m so glad to finally have a plugin that I know I can trust to get that magical tone, and now I can have more than one! Awesome

  87. Fran (verified owner)

What can I say. This is among the best neve 1073 style plugins ever. Beautiful saturation, beautiful colour, beautiful eq curves, bypass per band. Fixed frequencies are peace of mind for me and make it easier to get a rough mix sounding good very fast. Absolutely recommended!

  104. Drew G. (verified owner)

I’ve just started using this plugin on a current project and so far I’m absolutely in love with it. I bought it based on recommendations I ran across on multiple online forums for getting that beautiful warm and full Neve 1073 tone in the box. Could not be happier at the moment and looking forward to using it more and more.

Burnley 73 is an amazing vintage-analog modeled EQ plugin being sold at an extraordinarily low price — considering the unique design and superior quality. It’s easy to dial-in and adjust desired freqs, resulting in a smooth sound . . . or rough if that’s what you’re after! I highly recommend Sonimus plugins, and I look forward to checking out the rest of their line.

It’s a beautiful plugin and extremely responsive. I have one complaint though; “No Presets”! I would love to apply some presets and see what other great ears have come up with. Even a free plugin has presets these days. Yet to use the plugins to the best and understand the true quality of it.

I always buy new fancy eq plugins … but somehow I always return to Sonimus Burnley 73 on most of the tracks. It’s such a musical eq and with nice saturation in the preamp section. Combined with Kush AR1 compressor and the Fabfilter EQ3 these tre plugins make an great Channel strip in my DAW.

  129. Ahmed Alian (verified owner)

This is the best 1073 emulation iv ever heard. This doesnt just add harmonics — im not sure what is happening under the hood. What i do 100 percent know is that putting this on all my channels and dialing in the correct amount of drive … priceless sound. I will not be using the buzzwords, but i will be recommending the Burnley 73 to anyone who wants “that sound” and dont let the price make you think otherwise. Cheers x

This little eq can make a big difference to your sound. Especially on drums but not only. It just makes things sound fuller to me. The saturation knob was well thought out and you can use it as little or aggressive as you like. This is naturally a warm sounding eq and hard to use in harsh way. You have to use your ears here though. This eq is all about using your ear and sound shaping, not for precision. I love it for that. I’m a fan of it!

    For Burnley 73.

Review by Toby Pearce for onetrackperweek.com

Working to a strict production schedule of completing one track every week, it’s vital that I have the right tools at my fingertips. The Sonimus plugins are my secret weapons – they bring a touch of analog to my music. The Burnley 73 is perfect compliment to modern EQs, which are often infinitely adjustable. The parameters are pre-adjusted, which makes finding only the most musical frequencies easier and faster. The Saturation knob adds the final magic, and I often use it to add cohesion to my busses. After many years, I wouldn’t be without this tool.
