Introduction

The 2024 European Audio Engineering Society  Convention in Madrid was a landmark event that brought together some of the most prominent figures in audio engineering.

Sonimus’s long-time collaborator and esteemed speaker, Ezequiel Morfi, delivered an insightful talk about mastering in which he showcased SonEQ as a perfect tool for stereo audio mastering in the box.

Ezequiel Morfi is a renowned producer and sound engineer. He operates TITANIO Studios, a self-built studio in Buenos Aires, Argentina. With a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition and Music Technology, Ezequiel boasts over 2,000 commercial releases, collaborating with prominent Latin American artists such as Luis Alberto Spinetta and Charly García.

As a member of the Audio Engineering Society, he has held significant positions, including the chair of the Student Delegate Assembly and vice-chair of the Education Committee. Ezequiel is also a respected teacher and keynote speaker, presenting worldwide.

We took the opportunity to talk with him about his career, music, technology and his collaboration with Sonimus.

Early Beginnings and Career Path

Ezequiel’s fascination with music and technology began in childhood. Surrounded by home recording gear, Ezequiel learned the basics of recording and developed a passion for music. This early exposure naturally led him to play instruments and join bands. As he grew, Ezequiel’s interest expanded to using computers and software for music production, aligning with the technological advancements of his generation.

Establishing TITANIO Studios

Ezequiel’s journey from a home studio to a professional setup in Buenos Aires was a gradual but inevitable transition. He began mixing tracks for college friends, studying music composition from his home studio. It soon became a client hub, needing a move to a dedicated space. Ezequiel’s commitment to professional sound engineering led him to invest in better equipment and software, ultimately establishing TITANIO Studios as a premier recording, mixing, and mastering facility.

AES Convention

Ezequiel Morfi also participated in the 2024 European AES convention. His session, “Mastering Music – Busting Myths,” debunked common misconceptions about mastering music and highlighted one of our classic plugins, SonEQ.

His talk focused on the primary purpose of mastering, which is divided into two ideas: Strengthen the emotional impact of the music and carry out a quality assessment of the final product. Ezequiel stressed the importance of quality control in mastering, which ensures that music sounds good across different platforms and formats. He also prefers digital over analogue equipment due to reliability, recallability and quality. Morfi highlighted SonEQ as a perfect free candidate for stereo audio mastering in the box, showcasing the fact that you don’t need expensive plugins to do the job.

While technical advancements and competitions were noteworthy during the AES convention, the opportunity to reconnect with old friends, meet new colleagues, and engage in stimulating conversations stood out. The immersive sound systems and student recording competitions were highlights, but for Ezequiel, the conference’s value was fostering a sense of community among audio professionals.

Collaboration with Sonimus Plugins

Ezequiel and his TITANIO Studios team have been long-time collaborators with Sonimus Plugins, providing software beta testing services. This partnership highlights the importance of high-quality plugins in Ezequiel’s workflow, enhancing his ability to deliver the best sound quality. His endorsement and use of Sonimus Plugins testify to their reliability and effectiveness in professional audio production.

When asked about his favorite plugin, Ezequiel enthusiastically endorsed SonEQ 2, appreciating its versatility and performance. He noted, however, that among his colleagues at TITANIO Studios, there’s a diversity of plugin preferences, underscoring the varied approaches within the industry.

Advice for future engineers

Ezequiel stressed the importance of deep knowledge and understanding of tools beyond relying on presets and shortcuts. Drawing from his experience, he recommends aspiring sound engineers and producers study how their plugins and tools work thoroughly and experiment beyond conventional uses.

Future Trends in Music Production

Reflecting on the future of music production and mastering, Ezequiel expressed optimism about technological advancements while cautioning against over-reliance on automated solutions. He highlighted the potential for technology to democratize access to mastering tools but warned against diminishing the craft’s artistic and technical integrity.

Conclusion

Ezequiel Morfi’s career combines passion, innovation and dedication. From his early experiments with home recording to running a successful studio and collaborating with different professionals in the industry, Ezequiel continues to push the boundaries of sound engineering. His journey is an inspiration for aspiring producers and engineers, demonstrating that a love for music, coupled with technological prowess, can lead to remarkable achievements in the audio industry.
